Phaeomoniella chlamydospora

Phaeomoniella chlamydospora

Description

Phaeomoniella chlamydospora is an ascomycete fungus that serves as a critical phytopathogen in viticulture, primarily known for causing grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs). Belonging to the kingdom Fungi, this pathogen is widely recognized as the causal agent of Petri disease in young vines and is a major contributor to the complex disease known as esca in older vineyards.

The host range is predominantly limited to grapevines, both in nurseries and established vineyards. The fungus invades the vascular tissues of the wood, resulting in necrotic lesions and the gradual destruction of the xylem. Infection typically initiates through pruning wounds or other mechanical injuries, where spores are deposited by wind, rain, or human activities during vineyard maintenance.

The biology of Phaeomoniella chlamydospora is characterized by the production of chlamydospores, which allow the fungus to endure harsh environmental conditions. The pathogen thrives under moderate temperatures and high humidity, which facilitate spore release and germination. Once inside the vine, it colonizes the woody tissues, slowly clogging the water-conducting vessels and leading to a systemic decline of the plant.

The economic impact of this pathogen is severe. Affected vines exhibit symptoms ranging from reduced shoot vigor and interveinal chlorosis (often described as "tiger-striping" in esca cases) to total vine collapse. The chronic nature of the disease causes immense financial loss, as it reduces yields and eventually necessitates the removal and replacement of entire vineyard blocks.

Control and management strategies focus on sanitation and preventive care:

  • Disinfecting pruning shears between vines to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Applying fungicidal wound protectants immediately after pruning.
  • Sourcing clean, pathogen-free grafting material from certified nurseries.
  • Avoiding pruning during rainy conditions when spore dispersal is at its peak.
  • Carefully removing and destroying heavily infected wood to lower the local inoculum levels.
