Description

Pine bracket (Phellinus pini) is a destructive wood-decay fungus belonging to the Hymenochaetaceae family. It is a major pathogen responsible for causing red ring rot or white pocket rot in various coniferous species. The fungus is highly specialized, primarily affecting the heartwood of the tree, which leads to structural instability and eventual death of the host.

The host range of Phellinus pini includes pine, spruce, fir, and larch species. The pathogen secretes enzymes that degrade lignin, turning the wood into a spongy, mottled mass with white pockets separated by brown decayed wood. This decay process is particularly detrimental because it occurs deep inside the stem, often remaining hidden until the tree suffers from breakage during storms.

The life cycle begins with the release of basidiospores from perennial, hoof-shaped fruit bodies growing on the bark of infected trees. These spores are dispersed by wind and germinate when they land on injuries, broken branches, or exposed heartwood. Once inside, the fungus spreads slowly through the heartwood, establishing its mycelium and eventually forming new fruiting bodies as the tree ages.

Environmental factors favorable to Phellinus pini development include high humidity and the presence of older tree stands. The fungus is most problematic in managed forests where tree wounding is frequent, or in mature woodlands where trees have naturally accumulated various bark injuries over time. The slow growth of the fungus often makes it a long-term problem for forestry managers.

Effective management and control strategies focus on reducing the spread of the pathogen:

  • Execution of sanitary logging to remove infected trees and fruiting bodies.
  • Minimizing logging damage and bark wounds during forest maintenance.
  • Promoting forest health through selective thinning and tree vigor improvement.
  • Monitoring of mature stands for signs of fungal activity on the stems.
