Phialophora tracheiphila is a soil-borne fungal pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the genus Phialophora. It is a highly specialized phytopathogen primarily known for causing severe vascular wilting, with tomatoes being one of its most economically significant hosts among the Solanaceae family.

The pathogen induces a condition known as tracheomycosis or vascular wilt. Once it infects the host through the root system, the fungus colonizes the xylem vessels. By producing mycelia and toxic metabolites within the conductive tissues, it obstructs the transport of water and nutrients, which inevitably leads to wilting, chlorosis, and the eventual death of the affected plant.

Regarding its biology and life cycle, the fungus persists in the soil and on infected crop debris for several years. It propagates via microconidia, which are easily disseminated by irrigation water, contaminated tools, and movement of soil particles. Development is favored by temperate climates and consistent soil moisture levels, making greenhouse environments particularly susceptible to rapid outbreaks.

The economic impact of Phialophora tracheiphila is severe, as it causes significant yield losses. Infected plants show symptoms ranging from drooping leaves during the day to permanent wilting. Since the pathogen infects the internal vascular system, conventional contact fungicides are ineffective once the disease is established, emphasizing the need for strictly preventive strategies.

Effective management and control require a holistic approach focused on biosecurity. Key tactics include the deployment of resistant cultivars, rigorous crop rotation intervals (at least 4–5 years), and the sanitation of greenhouses and cultivation tools. Soil solarization or chemical fumigation may be necessary in heavily infested areas to reduce the inoculum level in the soil before planting.
