Phloeospora azaleae is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the Fungi kingdom, order Sphaeropsidales. It acts as the primary causative agent for leaf spot disease in various species of the Rhododendron genus, particularly impacting azaleas in both outdoor garden settings and protected cultivation environments.
The infection manifests as distinct lesions on the leaves. These spots start as small, discolored areas and gradually expand into necrotic, brown-to-grey zones, often surrounded by a dark, defined margin. A diagnostic feature is the presence of pycnidia, appearing as minute black specks within the infected spots, representing the fungus's reproductive structures.
The biological cycle of the pathogen is highly dependent on environmental moisture. The fungus survives the dormant season as mycelia or conidia embedded within fallen leaf litter. When spring temperatures rise and humidity levels increase, these spores are disseminated through rain splashes, irrigation, or wind-borne water droplets, quickly infecting neighboring healthy foliage.
