Phoma herbarum is a ubiquitous fungal pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, order Pleosporales, and genus Phoma. Because of its saprophytic capabilities, it can persist in the environment even in the absence of a host crop.

This fungus is responsible for various manifestations of phoma disease, typically characterized by the appearance of necrotic lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits. A diagnostic feature is the presence of pycnidia — small, black, dot-like fruiting bodies embedded within the infected tissue.
