Description

Phoma pinodella is a pathogenic fungus within the genus Phoma, recognized as a primary agent of foot rot and blight in various pulse crops. This pathogen is particularly destructive to pea crops (Pisum sativum), as it attacks the root system and the stem base, leading to systemic physiological disturbances in the plant.

The disease caused by this fungus is characterized by dark necrotic lesions appearing on the lower stems and taproots. As the infection progresses, these lesions can expand and encircle the stem, causing tissue necrosis. This disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, lodging, and in severe cases, the total death of the crop before pod development.

The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by the production of pycnidia, which serve as protective structures for asexual spores. These spores can persist in the soil for several years on infected crop debris, making the fungus highly persistent. Additionally, seed-borne transmission is a significant factor in the dispersal of the pathogen to previously healthy fields or geographic regions.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the outbreak. The fungus thrives in cool to moderate temperatures and high humidity levels. Poor drainage and heavy soils often exacerbate the risk of root infection. Furthermore, intensive monoculture practices significantly increase the inoculum load in the soil, creating a persistent disease pressure that is difficult to manage without rigorous crop rotation.

Integrated disease management (IDM) is the most effective approach for controlling this pathogen. Key strategies include the use of clean, fungicide-treated seeds, implementing a mandatory crop rotation of at least 4 years to break the infection cycle, and deep soil cultivation to incorporate and promote the decomposition of infested crop residues. Fungicidal foliar applications may also be used in areas with high disease pressure.
