Taxonomic position and pathogen type: Phoma trifolii belongs to the Kingdom Fungi, within the genus Phoma. It is an ascomycete pathogen responsible for causing specific fungal diseases in leguminous plants. The organism propagates through pycnidia, which are microscopic fruiting bodies that release conidia for spreading the infection to healthy host tissues.
Diseases and host crops: This fungus primarily causes leaf spot disease, known as phoma spot. Its main host is clover (Trifolium species), including red and white clover varieties. While primarily affecting forage legumes, the fungus can occasionally impact related wild legumes, surviving on them in areas surrounding cultivated fields.
Biology and life cycle: Phoma trifolii survives the winter as mycelium or pycnidia in crop debris left in the field. As temperatures rise in spring and moisture is present, conidia are released and dispersed by splashing rain or wind currents. Upon landing on host leaves, the spores germinate and penetrate the epidermal layer, establishing new infection sites that develop into necrotic lesions.
Developmental conditions and impact: The disease thrives in conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures (typically 18–25°C). The damage is characterized by premature leaf senescence and stunted stem growth. High infection rates significantly reduce the yield of green forage and decrease the protein quality, making the crop less desirable for animal feed.
Control and management measures: Effective management of Phoma trifolii relies on a combination of cultural and chemical practices:
- Implementation of crop rotation to break the survival cycle of the fungus in the soil.
- Deep plowing to bury infested debris and facilitate biological decay.
