Phoma tropica is a fungal phytopathogen classified within the genus Phoma and the family Didymellaceae. As a typical representative of the deuteromycetes, it primarily spreads via asexual reproduction, forming pycnidia—small, flask-shaped fruiting bodies. These structures produce mass quantities of conidia, which act as the main dispersal units for infecting healthy plant tissues under favourable conditions.

This pathogen is responsible for various forms of phoma disease, causing necrotic lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits of diverse agricultural crops. The damage manifests as dark, sunken spots that may enlarge over time, eventually leading to stem girdling, wilting, and significant physiological stress for the plant. The necrosis caused by Phoma tropica often weakens the structural integrity of the plant, increasing susceptibility to secondary infections.

The biology of Phoma tropica is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. It survives unfavourable seasons as mycelium or chlamydospores in soil or infected plant debris. When environmental conditions improve—specifically when moisture levels are high and temperatures range from moderate to warm—the fungus releases spores that are disseminated by water splashes, rain, or wind currents to new host plants.

Epidemic spread occurs primarily in humid environments where foliage remains wet for extended periods. Dense planting patterns, excessive nitrogen fertilization, and the presence of alternate weed hosts create ideal conditions for the rapid multiplication of the fungus. Because the pathogen can persist in the soil for several years, crop rotation is one of the most critical factors in limiting the inoculum density in a given field.

Effective management and control of Phoma tropica require a multifaceted integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

  • Choosing certified, disease-free seeds and applying systemic seed dressings.
  • Implementing strict crop rotation protocols to break the pathogen's life cycle.
  • Sanitizing fields by removing or deeply incorporating crop residues into the soil.
  • Applying targeted foliar fungicides during peak humidity periods or when initial symptoms appear.
