Phragmidium potentillae is a fungal pathogen belonging to the phylum Basidiomycota, which specifically causes rust disease on plants within the Potentilla genus. As an obligate parasite, this fungus requires living plant tissue to complete its complex lifecycle. It is a significant concern for gardeners and nursery growers who specialize in cultivating various species of cinquefoil.

The disease manifests through the development of small, bright orange pustules on the underside of leaves. As the fungus progresses through its cycle, these pustules evolve into darker, reddish-brown or black structures known as telia. Severe infestations lead to chlorosis, premature defoliation, and significant weakening of the plant, which drastically reduces its aesthetic value and physiological health.

The biology of Phragmidium potentillae involves overwintering on infected plant debris, particularly on fallen leaves. During favorable spring conditions, such as high humidity and moderate temperatures, the fungal spores are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, or insects to healthy foliage. These conditions act as catalysts for primary infection, leading to rapid spread throughout the canopy.

The impact of this pathogen is primarily observed through the reduction of photosynthetic efficiency. By diverting nutrients from the host plant to support its own growth, the fungus causes stunting and inhibits the production of flower buds. In severe cases, especially when the plant is already stressed, the infection can make the host susceptible to secondary pathogens, ultimately leading to decline.

Effective control of Potentilla rust necessitates an integrated strategy focusing on both prevention and mitigation. Sanitation is the most critical first step to reduce initial inoculum in the landscape. If chemical intervention is required, systemic fungicides are generally more effective than contact ones, as they penetrate the plant tissue and protect new growth throughout the growing season.
