Phyllactinia guttata is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the order Erysiphales. It is a well-known causal agent of powdery mildew disease, primarily affecting various deciduous trees and shrubs. Unlike other powdery mildew fungi that often cover both surfaces of leaves, this pathogen is frequently found concentrated on the underside of the leaf.
This fungus has a wide host range, including species from the families Betulaceae, Corylaceae, and Fagaceae, such as hazelnuts, birch, alder, and oaks. The disease manifests as thin, white, felt-like patches on the leaves. As the infection progresses, the fungus produces cleistothecia, which appear as small, dark brown to black dots scattered across the mycelial mat.
The life cycle of Phyllactinia guttata involves both sexual and asexual stages. The fungus overwinters in the form of cleistothecia embedded in fallen leaf litter. In the spring, these structures release ascospores that initiate primary infections. During the growing season, asexual conidia are produced and spread by wind, allowing the pathogen to infect healthy foliage repeatedly.
Favorable conditions for the development of this pathogen include warm, humid weather and reduced air circulation within the canopy. These conditions promote rapid germination of spores and colonization of plant tissue. Heavy infestation causes premature leaf senescence, reduced photosynthetic activity, and overall decline in the plant's vigor, making it particularly damaging to young trees.
Effective management focuses on reducing the initial inoculum and maintaining plant health. Sanitation practices, such as the removal and destruction of infected leaf litter in autumn, are critical to breaking the disease cycle. When chemical control is necessary, systemic fungicides containing triazoles or strobilurins are typically applied to protect foliage during peak susceptibility periods.
