Description
Phyllosticta ampelicida (synonym Guignardia bidwellii) is a destructive fungal pathogen responsible for black rot, one of the most common and damaging diseases in vineyards worldwide. Classified within the Ascomycota phylum, this pathogen specifically attacks members of the Vitaceae family, causing significant economic losses by compromising both vegetative health and fruit quality.
The infection manifests as necrotic spots on leaves, stems, and berries. On leaves, symptoms begin as small reddish-brown circular spots that enlarge over time with light brown centers surrounded by a dark margin. The characteristic black, pimple-like fruiting bodies, known as pycnidia, eventually emerge in these spots. Infected berries turn hard, shriveled, and dark, eventually becoming black, mummified structures.
The life cycle of this pathogen involves both sexual and asexual spore production. The fungus overwinters primarily as mycelium in mummified berries and infected vine shoots. With the arrival of spring and warmer weather, high humidity and frequent rainfall trigger the release of spores, which are then splashed onto susceptible green tissues, initiating the infection cycle for the new growing season.
Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the disease's development. Phyllosticta ampelicida thrives in warm and wet weather, especially when leaves remain wet for extended periods. Inadequate canopy management, which leads to poor airflow and high local humidity, significantly facilitates the spread of the fungus throughout the vineyard block.
Effective control of black rot requires an integrated approach to vineyard management:
- Removal of overwintering inoculum sources, such as mummified berries and dead canes.
- Optimizing vine canopy density through pruning and leaf pulling to ensure better airflow.
- Applying preventative fungicide sprays during the peak periods of susceptibility, usually between pre-bloom and veraison.
- Regular monitoring of vineyard rows for the first signs of infection to time applications accurately.
