Description

Taxonomy and pathogen type. Phyllosticta cucurbitacearum (synonymous with Phoma cucurbitacearum) is a fungal pathogen belonging to the class Dothideomycetes. It is an opportunistic pathogen that specifically targets plants within the Cucurbitaceae family. The fungus acts by colonizing plant tissue and producing specialized fruiting structures known as pycnidia, which are essential for its survival and dispersal within the field.

Diseases and host crops. The fungus is responsible for the Phyllosticta leaf spot disease, commonly affecting cucumbers, squashes, pumpkins, melons, and watermelons. The symptoms appear as irregular or circular lesions on the leaves, starting as pale spots and gradually turning brown or necrotic. Under severe infection, the spots may coalesce, leading to significant defoliation of the crop.

Biology and life cycle. The pathogen overwinters as mycelium and pycnidia in crop debris left in the soil from the previous season. When environmental conditions become favorable, the pycnidia release conidia, which are spread by splashing rain, irrigation water, or agricultural tools. The primary infection occurs through natural leaf openings or wounds, allowing the fungus to establish itself and initiate a new cycle of host tissue colonization.

Environmental conditions and impact. The development of the disease is strictly dependent on high humidity levels and moderate temperatures. Rainy periods are particularly conducive to disease outbreaks. The economic impact is substantial, as the reduction of leaf area leads to lower photosynthetic rates, weakened plant vigor, reduced fruit set, and overall poor quality of the yield in both greenhouse and field conditions.

Control and management measures. Managing this pathogen requires an integrated approach to minimize primary inoculum levels and prevent secondary spread:

  • Strict sanitation, including the removal and destruction of all infested plant residues.
  • Crop rotation with non-cucurbit crops for a minimum of 2–3 years.
  • Improving air circulation in greenhouses to maintain lower humidity levels.
  • Applying fungicides containing copper or other approved chemical agents during high-risk periods.
