Cranberry phyllosticta leaf spot

Phyllosticta elongata is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the genus Phyllosticta. It acts as the causal agent of phyllosticta leaf spot, a significant disease affecting cranberry plants (Vaccinium macrocarpon). This pathogen specializes in parasitizing cranberry foliage, which can lead to reduced plant vigor and crop yield losses.

The disease is characterized by distinct leaf spots that appear during the growing season. Initially, these spots are small and reddish-brown, often appearing on the leaf margins or centers. As the infection progresses, the centers of the spots become grayish or white, surrounded by a dark brown necrotic border. In severe cases, the infected leaves wilt and drop prematurely, causing defoliation.

The life cycle of the pathogen is centered on its survival on overwintering plant debris. The fungus produces pycnidia, small fruiting bodies, on fallen leaves and infected stems. When moisture levels are sufficient during the spring, spores are released and dispersed by splashing rain or irrigation water to healthy leaves, where they initiate new infection cycles.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence of this disease. Phyllosticta elongata thrives in humid, cool to moderate climates, especially when canopy density prevents adequate airflow. Poor cultural practices, such as excessive irrigation or high nitrogen levels, can exacerbate the disease progression, allowing it to spread rapidly across large fields if left unmanaged.

• Removing and destroying infected leaf litter to reduce the primary inoculum.
• Implementing proper field management, including thinning to increase sunlight and air movement.
