Soybean phyllosticta leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phyllosticta glycineum. Belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the class Dothideomycetes, this pathogen is a common threat to soybean production worldwide. It primarily affects the leaves, although in severe cases, it can spread to stems and pods, damaging the plant's structural and photosynthetic integrity.
The infection is characterized by the appearance of tan or grayish-brown spots with distinct, darker margins on the leaf surface. As the fungus develops, tiny, black, flask-shaped structures called pycnidia appear within these necrotic spots. These structures are essential diagnostic features that allow farmers and agronomists to identify the pathogen under field conditions.
The life cycle of Phyllosticta glycineum relies on its ability to overwinter on infected crop debris and in the soil.
