Phymatotrichopsis root rot

Phymatotrichopsis omnivorum

Description

Systematic position and pathogen type: Phymatotrichopsis omnivorum is a soil-borne fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota. It is recognized as one of the most destructive plant pathogens in agricultural history, specifically targeting the root systems of dicotyledonous plants, making it a major subject of phytopathological study.

Diseases and affected crops: The fungus is the primary cause of Texas root rot, also known as cotton root rot. It is characterized by its wide host range, which includes over 2,000 species of dicots. Key economic crops such as cotton, alfalfa, grapes, and various fruit and nut trees are highly susceptible, often showing rapid wilting and sudden death once infected.

Biology and life cycle: The pathogen survives in the soil primarily as sclerotia, which are dormant masses of hyphae that can persist for many years. When favorable conditions occur, these sclerotia germinate, producing thick, fungal strands (rhizomorphs) that invade the host roots. The fungus consumes the root bark and cambium, effectively severing the water and nutrient transport pathways.

Conditions for development and spread: The fungus thrives in warm, alkaline soils with temperatures typically between 25°C and 30°C. It spreads through the soil in expanding circular patches. Spread occurs primarily through the root-to-root contact of neighboring plants or via the movement of infested soil by farm machinery and environmental factors during cultivation.

Harmfulness and control measures: The harm caused by this pathogen is significant due to the mortality rates in high-value crop fields. Control is complex, necessitating integrated management strategies:

  • Rotating susceptible crops with non-host resistant grains.
  • Deep tillage practices to expose and disrupt soil sclerotia.
  • Applying soil amendments that promote natural microbial antagonism.
  • Careful management of soil pH and moisture in irrigated systems.
