Physalospora glandicola

Physalospora glandicola

Description

Physalospora glandicola is an ascomycete fungus within the Physalospora genus, known for its role as a phytopathogen affecting woody plants. It primarily focuses its parasitic activity on oak species (Quercus spp.), leading to significant degradation of seeds and woody tissue through necrosis and secondary rotting.

The disease caused by this fungus manifests as necrotic lesions on acorns, leading to premature drop and total loss of seed viability. In forestry, this pathogen poses a threat to natural forest regeneration, as the infection ruins the quality of the acorn harvest. Besides acorns, it can potentially affect young shoots, causing localized cankers.

The biological cycle of Physalospora glandicola involves both sexual and asexual stages. The fungus overwinters in infected debris or directly on the host plant. With the onset of warm and humid spring weather, it produces spores that are dispersed via rain splashes and air currents. Once the spores land on susceptible host tissue, they penetrate the surface and colonize the internal cell structure.

Developmental conditions are heavily reliant on humidity levels. Extended periods of rainfall during the fruit ripening phase drastically increase infection rates. Furthermore, trees weakened by drought, insect damage, or poor site conditions show higher susceptibility to the fungus. Preventing physical damage to trees and maintaining a healthy forest stand are critical in inhibiting the spread of the pathogen.

Effective management and control measures should be implemented to minimize economic and ecological damage:

  • Rigorous sanitation by removing and destroying all infected acorns and branches from the forest floor.
  • Implementing regular forest thinning to improve air circulation and reduce humidity within the canopy.
  • Applying preventive fungicides in nursery settings for seedling production.
  • Monitoring pest populations that may facilitate the transmission of fungal spores through physical damage to tree bark.
