Physalospora rhodina is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Ascomycota phylum. In modern plant pathology, this organism is widely recognized as the teleomorph state of Lasiodiplodia theobromae. It acts as a significant threat to agricultural productivity, particularly in warm, humid regions, where it impacts a wide range of host plants across multiple families.

The fungus is responsible for various diseases, including diplodia rot, stem-end rot, and branch dieback. It severely affects crops such as citrus, grapes, cocoa, maize, and various woody ornamental species. The primary symptoms involve the darkening of tissues, necrosis of stems, and the development of black, pycnidial fruiting bodies on the surface of infected fruits and woody tissues.

The life cycle of the pathogen involves both sexual (ascospores) and asexual (pycnidiospores) reproduction. These spores are easily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and insect vectors. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions as mycelium or pycnidia embedded within plant debris, soil, or infected woody parts, acting as a perennial source of inoculum for subsequent seasons.

Development and spread of Physalospora rhodina are highly correlated with high temperatures and environmental humidity. The pathogen is opportunistic, meaning it thrives on plants weakened by environmental stress, poor nutrition, or prior mechanical damage. Entry into the host typically occurs through wounds, pruning cuts, or natural openings like lenticels, followed by rapid colonization of the tissue.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize fungal inoculum and plant susceptibility:

  • Rigorous sanitation, including the removal and destruction of all dead and infected plant material.
  • Timely pruning and immediate application of protective sealants or fungicides to wound sites.
  • Maintenance of optimal tree health through balanced fertilization and appropriate irrigation.
  • Application of preventive fungicidal sprays during periods of high humidity and rainfall to reduce the risk of infection.
