Cranberry physalospora (lat. Physalospora vaccinii) is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota phylum. It is known primarily for infecting plants of the Vaccinium genus, such as cranberries and blueberries. This phytopathogen is of significant concern to commercial growers due to its ability to cause specific forms of fruit decay and systemic tissue damage within the plant.
The primary symptom of the disease is a condition often referred to as "dry rot" of the fruit. Infected berries lose their luster, discolor, and become shriveled and hardened while still attached to the plant. Unlike other rot-causing organisms that turn fruit into a mushy state, this pathogen causes a mummification effect. Stem infections are also common, resulting in necrotic lesions and dieback of the woody parts of the plant.
The biology of Physalospora vaccinii involves an infection cycle facilitated by the presence of fruiting bodies on overwintered plant debris.
