Plant physiological disorders (Physical disorder) represent a broad category of crop problems triggered by abiotic, non-living factors rather than by pathogens like fungi, bacteria, or viruses. Because these disorders are not infectious, they cannot spread from plant to plant, but they often appear simultaneously across large sections of a field when environmental conditions become suboptimal.

From a biological perspective, physiological disorders are not classified within any kingdom or genus of pathogens, as they are not biological organisms. Instead, they are metabolic dysfunctions or structural disruptions within plant tissues resulting from environmental stress that exceeds the plant's ability to maintain its homeostasis.

These disorders manifest through various symptoms including chlorosis, tissue necrosis, fruit deformity, uneven ripening, and stunted development. Common examples across agriculture include blossom-end rot in tomatoes, bitter pit in apples, hollow heart in potatoes, and various types of leaf scorch caused by extreme weather or improper mineral uptake.

The development of these disorders is dictated by environmental variables and management practices. Key contributors include extreme temperature fluctuations, soil moisture extremes, imbalanced nutrient availability (such as localized calcium deficiencies), high light intensity leading to sunburn, and improper chemical applications that interfere with plant metabolic functions.

The economic impact is significant, as physiological disorders primarily degrade the quality and marketable value of harvested produce. Affected fruits or tubers may be unsalable, and the weakened physiological state of the plants makes them more susceptible to opportunistic pathogens, leading to further losses in yield and storage stability.

Management and control strategies focus on prevention rather than treatment. Since there is no curative fungicide or bactericide for these issues, growers should prioritize the following:

  • accurate soil and tissue analysis to ensure nutrient balance;
  • implementing consistent irrigation scheduling;
  • utilizing protective measures such as shade cloth or mulching;
  • selecting varieties adapted to the specific local climate;
  • careful management of soil pH to prevent nutrient lock-out.
