Description

Systematic position and nature of the pathogen: Physoderma maydis (formerly Physoderma zeae-maydis) is an obligate parasite belonging to the Chytridiomycota phylum, specifically the Blastocladiomycetes class. It is a microscopic, soil-borne organism that functions as a specialized pathogen, causing brown spot disease in maize plants.

Diseases and crops affected: The fungus exclusively attacks maize (corn). The infection manifests as numerous small, dark brown or reddish-brown lesions on the leaves, leaf sheaths, and stalks. A critical symptom of this pathogen is its ability to infect leaf sheaths at the nodes, which weakens the stalk and often causes it to break during windy weather.

Biology and lifecycle: The pathogen survives in the soil and on crop debris as dormant sporangia. When environmental conditions provide sufficient moisture and temperatures ranging between 23°C and 30°C, these sporangia germinate and release motile zoospores. These spores swim through water films on the plant surface to infect new tissue, repeating the cycle throughout the growing season.

Conditions for development and economic impact: High humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm weather are essential requirements for the development of Physoderma maydis. The economic impact is significant, as the disease reduces photosynthetic activity in the foliage and causes lodging of the crop, leading to severe grain yield losses and potential harvest failures.

Protection and control measures: Disease management strategies are primarily focused on reducing the survival and spread of the pathogen:

  • Planting resistant maize hybrids that show lower susceptibility.
  • Implementing crop rotation to break the cycle of the soil-borne pathogen.
  • Deep tillage practices to bury crop residues and promote decomposition.
  • Improving field drainage to reduce standing water and overall moisture levels.
  • Applying fungicides, although this is often only effective as a preventive measure in high-risk areas.
