Description

Physoderma zeae-maydis is a soil-borne chytrid fungus that serves as the causal agent of brown spot disease in maize. This pathogen belongs to the Chytridiomycota phylum and is known for its ability to survive in soil and crop debris for several years as dormant sporangia, waiting for favorable conditions to infect the next corn crop.

The disease primarily manifests as small, yellowish-brown lesions on the leaves, leaf sheaths, and stalks. As the infection progresses, these spots often coalesce into dark brown or black bands. Severe infestations can weaken the stalks, significantly increasing the risk of lodging, which leads to substantial yield losses and complicates mechanical harvesting operations.

The life cycle of P. zeae-maydis is strictly moisture-dependent. When temperatures range between 23°C and 30°C and free water is present, the dormant sporangia release motile zoospores. These zoospores require rain splashes or irrigation water to travel into the whorl of the corn plant, where they accumulate in the leaf axils and penetrate the host tissue.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of the disease outbreak. Continuous cropping of maize in the same field, combined with high humidity and heavy rainfall during the rapid growth stages, creates the perfect environment for the pathogen to thrive. Poor soil drainage further exacerbates the issue by keeping the leaf axils moist for longer periods, facilitating the colonization process.

  • Planting resistant or tolerant corn hybrids to minimize susceptibility.
