Physopella zeae is a specialized fungal plant pathogen classified within the division Basidiomycota. It is the causal agent of tropical corn rust, a disease that significantly affects maize cultivation in tropical and subtropical regions. This pathogen is an obligate parasite, meaning it requires living host tissue to complete its life cycle.
The disease is characterized by the formation of small, numerous uredinia on the leaf surface. These pustules typically produce light-colored or reddish-brown spores. Unlike common rust, Physopella zeae symptoms often appear as fine chlorotic streaks or spots that eventually cover the majority of the leaf area, drastically reducing photosynthetic capacity.
Regarding its biology, the fungus spreads primarily through airborne urediniospores. These spores require specific environmental conditions to germinate, namely high humidity and moderate to high temperatures. The pathogen's life cycle is continuous as long as a suitable host crop is available, making it particularly aggressive in regions with overlapping corn planting seasons.
The impact on crop yield is significant, particularly if infection occurs during the early stages of grain filling. The primary damage mechanism is the disruption of nutrient transport and reduced photosynthesis, leading to smaller kernels and overall lower grain weight. In severe cases, the entire canopy may senesce prematurely, further compromising the final harvest.
Effective control of Physopella zeae relies on multiple agronomic strategies. The most sustainable method is the use of resistant maize hybrids specifically bred for tropical environments. Additionally, fungicide applications, particularly with triazoles and strobilurins, are effective if applied at the initial onset of symptoms.
