Plectosphaerella melonis is a soil-borne fungal pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the phylum Ascomycota. It is a highly aggressive parasite known to cause root and stem rot, representing a significant economic threat to modern vegetable production, especially in controlled environment agriculture.

The primary host range of this pathogen includes several economically important crops within the Cucurbitaceae family, such as cucumbers, melons, and pumpkins. The disease manifests through symptoms of root decay, stunting, chlorosis, and sudden wilting of the aerial parts of the plant due to the obstruction of vascular tissues by the fungal mycelium.

The biological cycle of the fungus is characterized by its ability to survive in the soil or in infected plant debris as chlamydospores for extended periods. Once a susceptible host is present, these spores germinate and infect the root system. The fungus invades the cortex and progresses into the vascular bundles, disrupting nutrient and water transport.

Environmental conditions such as high soil humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C are optimal for the rapid spread of the disease. The pathogen disseminates quickly through irrigation systems, contaminated substrate, infested tools, and human activity within the field or greenhouse, leading to localized outbreaks that can decimate entire crop cycles.

Control of Plectosphaerella melonis requires an integrated management approach, as chemical eradication is often difficult due to the pathogen's persistence in the soil. Effective measures include:

  • Strict adherence to sanitation protocols in greenhouses.
  • Implementation of crop rotation with non-host species.
