Poinsettia mosaic is a plant disease caused by the Poinsettia mosaic virus (PnMV). Taxonomically, it belongs to the genus Tymovirus, within the Tymoviridae family. As a viral pathogen, it specifically targets members of the Euphorbiaceae family, with Euphorbia pulcherrima being the most commercially significant host affected by this virus.
Symptoms of the infection manifest primarily on the foliage as irregular mosaic patterns, leaf yellowing, and chlorotic spots. While some cultivars exhibit severe symptoms, including leaf distortion and stunted growth, many infections remain latent, making it difficult for growers to identify infected plants by visual inspection alone. Such asymptomatic carriers act as hidden reservoirs for further spread.
