Poria latemarginata is a wood-decaying fungal species classified within the kingdom Fungi (often associated with the genus Oxyporus). This phytopathogen is primarily known for causing significant decay in various woody plant species, acting as a decomposer that targets both living trees and seasoned timber.
The fungus is identified as a causative agent of white rot, which leads to the degradation of cellulose and lignin within the wood structure. As the infection progresses, the wood loses its structural integrity, often appearing bleached and stringy. This damage significantly compromises the health of the host, often leading to structural failure or the eventual mortality of the affected plant.
The life cycle of the pathogen involves the production of persistent or annual fruiting bodies that typically appear as flat, crust-like structures on the surface of the wood. Spore dissemination is primarily driven by environmental factors such as wind and rain.
