Potato aucuba mosaic virus (PAMV) is a viral pathogen that causes the disease known as aucuba mosaic. Systematically, this virus is classified within the genus Potexvirus, family Alphaflexiviridae. It acts as an infectious agent that primarily targets Solanaceae crops, significantly reducing both plant vigor and overall yield potential.
The primary host for this pathogen is the potato plant, although it may also affect certain species of tomatoes and various weed species within the Solanaceae family. The characteristic symptom of the disease is the development of bright yellow spots on the leaves, which resemble the variegated foliage of the plant Aucuba japonica, hence the name of the condition.
The biology of the virus is largely defined by its transmission through infected seed tubers and mechanical contact. The virus remains viable within potato tubers over multiple seasons, posing a severe threat to seed certification programs and industrial potato farming. Unlike some other viruses, mechanical transmission via handling, pruning tools, and plant-to-plant contact in the field is a major factor in its spread.
Optimal conditions for the spread of the virus are typically linked to the planting of infected tubers. Once the virus enters the plant, it moves systemically through the vascular tissues, interfering with essential physiological processes such as photosynthesis. Symptoms vary depending on the potato cultivar, ranging from mild leaf mottle to severe necrosis and premature leaf senescence.
The economic impact of the virus is characterized by decreased tuber size, lower starch content, and reduced suitability for long-term storage. Effective control relies heavily on integrated pest management and strict hygiene:
