Potato latent virus

Potato latent

Description

Systematic classification and pathogen nature: Potato latent virus (PVX), also widely known as Potato X virus, is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Potexvirus within the family Alphaflexiviridae. The virions are filamentous and contain a single-stranded RNA genome. It is considered one of the most widely distributed viruses in potato cultivation globally, often persisting within host tissues without triggering obvious symptoms.

Diseases and host plants: While the primary host is the potato plant, the virus also infects tomatoes, peppers, and various wild species of the Solanaceae family. In single infections, the disease often remains latent, manifesting as mild mottling or no visible signs at all. However, it can significantly exacerbate the symptoms of other viral infections, leading to severe mosaic patterns, leaf distortion, and growth stunting in combination with other pathogens.

Biology and life cycle: Unlike many other potato viruses, PVX does not rely on aphids or other insect vectors for transmission. Its primary transmission mechanism is mechanical contact. The virus spreads easily through physical interactions between diseased and healthy foliage, damaged roots, or through agricultural machinery. Contaminated tools and contact between plants during field operations are the most frequent causes of infection outbreaks.

Developmental conditions: The virus survives within infected tubers, which serve as the primary reservoir for the next growing season. Environmental conditions do not affect the survival of the virus as much as human activity does; the virus is highly stable and can remain infectious on surfaces, clothing, and field equipment for extended periods, facilitating transmission across large areas.

Damage and control measures: The economic impact includes progressive yield reduction and the loss of seed vigor over several generations. Effective control strategies include:

  • planting certified virus-free seed tubers;
  • implementing rigorous sanitation protocols for farm equipment;
  • conducting regular field inspections to rogue out symptomatic plants;
  • maintaining good weed control to eliminate alternate hosts in the vicinity.
