Systematics and nature of the pathogen: The causative agent is the Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV), which belongs to the genus Ilarvirus and the family Bromoviridae. The virus consists of small isometric particles containing a single-stranded RNA genome. It is recognized globally as a major pathogen affecting the health and productivity of various Prunus species.
Host range and symptoms: The virus primarily infects stone fruit species, including cherries, plums, peaches, apricots, and almonds. Symptoms often include necrotic ring spots, chlorotic patterns, leaf mosaic, stunting, and deformation. In severe cases, the virus leads to shoot dieback, poor fruit quality, and a general decline in the tree's physiological vigor over several seasons.
Biology and cycle: PNRSV is systemic within the plant and is primarily transmitted via infected budding or grafting material. A significant pathway for secondary spread in the orchard is through infected pollen, which is transported by bees and other pollinators during bloom. Additionally, the virus can be transmitted through seeds or via physical contact between roots and wounded branches during standard pruning operations.
Development conditions and impact: The virus can persist in a latent state for many years without obvious symptoms, making detection difficult without laboratory testing. The economic impact is significant: infected trees show reduced growth, diminished yield, and reduced lifespan.
