Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV) is a widespread viral pathogen belonging to the Ilarvirus genus within the Bromoviridae family. It serves as a major threat to commercial fruit production, causing significant physiological disorders in stone fruit trees including cherries, plums, peaches, apricots, and almonds worldwide.
The disease is characterized by a range of symptoms, most notably chlorotic rings, necrotic spots, and line patterns appearing on the foliage in early spring. In severe cases, the affected leaf tissue may drop out, leaving a distinct tattered appearance. Trees often exhibit stunted growth, reduced canopy density, and a marked decline in overall fruit quality and yield over successive seasons.
The transmission biology of PNRSV is distinct because it is primarily spread through infected pollen. During the flowering stage, the virus moves efficiently between trees via pollinators, leading to rapid disease spread in orchards.
