Avocado cercospora spot

Pseudocercospora purpurea

Description

Pseudocercospora purpurea is a specialized fungal phytopathogen belonging to the Kingdom Fungi and the genus Pseudocercospora. It is the causal agent of Cercospora spot, a significant disease affecting avocado orchards worldwide. This pathogen specifically targets both foliage and developing fruit, leading to reduced yield and poor fruit marketability.

The primary symptoms manifest as small, angular, dark brown to purple spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these lesions may coalesce, leading to premature leaf drop and weakening of the tree. On the fruit, the disease creates firm, dark, slightly sunken lesions; as the fruit matures, these spots may crack, facilitating the entry of secondary decay-causing organisms.

The biology of the pathogen is centered on its ability to overwinter in infected plant debris, such as fallen leaves and mummified fruit remaining in the orchard. During favorable weather, conidia are produced and dispersed primarily by wind-driven rain or splashing water to susceptible tissue on the tree, initiating the infection cycle.

The disease thrives in warm, humid conditions. High rainfall and moderate to high temperatures provide the optimal environment for fungal sporulation and rapid spread. Outbreaks are often most severe in environments where canopy moisture remains high for extended periods, preventing the foliage from drying effectively.

Control and management strategies include:

  • Maintaining orchard hygiene by removing and destroying infected plant debris.
  • Pruning to ensure good airflow and reduce humidity levels within the canopy.
  • Applying preventive copper-based fungicide sprays during the fruit-set and development phases.
  • Monitoring weather patterns to schedule applications before anticipated rainy periods.
