Pseudocercosporella capsellae is a fungal plant pathogen responsible for white leaf spot, a disease that primarily affects members of the Brassicaceae family, including canola (oilseed rape), mustard, and various vegetable brassicas. It belongs to the phylum Ascomycota and represents a significant economic threat to agricultural production worldwide.

The disease is characterized by the appearance of circular to irregular spots on the leaf surface, which typically develop a white or grayish center surrounded by a darker brown border. Under humid environmental conditions, the fungal sporulation may appear as a fine, light-colored dusting on these spots. Severe infection results in chlorosis, premature defoliation, and significant reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.

The pathogen's life cycle involves survival over the winter season in infected crop residues, soil, or occasionally on seeds as dormant mycelium. Primary infection occurs during the spring when conidia, produced in the fruiting bodies, are dispersed by wind and rain splashes onto the emerging foliage. Secondary infection cycles occur throughout the growing season, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly under favorable conditions.

Development and spread of Pseudocercosporella capsellae are strongly favored by cool to moderate temperatures ranging between +15°C and +20°C and frequent leaf wetness. High crop density and poor field aeration facilitate the rapid accumulation of inoculum. Periods of prolonged rainfall or heavy dew significantly increase the severity of the disease outbreaks in susceptible fields.

The economic impact of this pathogen is reflected in reduced seed yields and lower quality of harvested products, such as oil content in canola. Effective management strategies include the implementation of a diverse crop rotation system, deep incorporation of crop debris to reduce the initial inoculum, the use of certified disease-free seeds, and timely application of foliar fungicides when disease thresholds are exceeded.
