Alfalfa leaf spot

Pseudopeziza medicaginis

Description

Alfalfa leaf spot, caused by the fungus Pseudopeziza medicaginis, is the most widespread foliage disease affecting alfalfa crops worldwide. This pathogen belongs to the Ascomycota phylum and is classified as an obligate parasite that specializes in infecting the Medicago genus. It significantly impacts forage quality by causing severe defoliation of the crop.

The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of small, circular, dark brown to black spots on the leaflets. As the infection progresses, a small, disc-shaped fruiting body called an apothecium develops in the center of each spot. When the disease is severe, leaflets turn yellow and drop prematurely, which drastically reduces the crude protein content and overall yield of the forage.

The life cycle of Pseudopeziza medicaginis is primarily maintained on infected alfalfa debris left in the field during the winter. When conditions are favorable in the spring, the fungus produces ascospores that are dispersed by wind or splashing rain to new, healthy foliage. The infection process requires persistent leaf wetness to succeed, making weather conditions a major factor in disease severity.

The fungus thrives in moderate temperature ranges (approximately 15°C to 25°C) coupled with high humidity. Periods of frequent rainfall, heavy dew, or overhead irrigation provide the ideal environment for multiple infection cycles within a single growing season. Prolonged outbreaks lead to weakened plants with reduced vigor, poor regrowth after cutting, and compromised winter hardiness.

Management of alfalfa leaf spot relies on integrated cultural practices rather than chemical control, which is often not economical for forage production. Key strategies include:

  • harvesting alfalfa at the early bloom stage to remove infected foliage before leaf drop;
  • selecting resistant or tolerant alfalfa cultivars;
  • maintaining field sanitation by removing crop residues;
  • ensuring proper stand density to promote airflow and quicker drying of the canopy.
