Description
Systematic position and nature of the pathogen. Pustula tragopogonis belongs to the kingdom Chromista, phylum Oomycota, and the family Albuginaceae. Often referred to as an oomycete, it is an obligate parasite of plants in the Asteraceae family. Historically classified under the genus Albugo, it was reclassified into the genus Pustula based on its specific morphological and molecular characteristics.
Diseases and host plants. The pathogen is responsible for white blister rust, a disease primarily affecting various species of Tragopogon (salsify) and other related Asteraceae. The infection is characterized by the appearance of raised, white, blister-like pustules on the leaves, stems, and sometimes floral parts. These blisters contain masses of sporangia that rupture the plant epidermis.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves asexual reproduction via sporangia, which are disseminated by wind or splashing water. When moisture is present on the plant surface, sporangia germinate to release zoospores that penetrate the host tissue. Overwintering occurs primarily through thick-walled oospores formed within the decaying host tissue, which can survive in the soil for several seasons.
Conditions for development and impact. The development of Pustula tragopogonis is heavily dependent on cool, wet weather conditions. High humidity levels and prolonged leaf wetness are essential for the germination of sporangia and infection. The damage caused by this pathogen includes reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and in severe cases, plant death or complete loss of market value for the affected crop.
Control and management. Managing white blister rust requires an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and chemical intervention:
- Removal and destruction of infected plant debris to reduce inoculum sources.
- Practicing crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
- Ensuring adequate airflow in fields to minimize leaf wetness.
- Applying fungicides, particularly those active against Oomycetes, such as metalaxyl or copper-based compounds, during the early stages of the disease.
