Rye mosaic is a viral disease caused by the Rye mosaic virus (RMV), a member of the Potyviridae family. This pathogen is a significant concern for winter rye growers globally, as it disrupts plant physiological processes, leading to stunted growth and reduced crop yields. As a specialized virus, it requires living hosts to survive and proliferate within the agricultural environment.

The disease is primarily characterized by typical mosaic patterns, chlorotic stripes, and mottling on the leaf surfaces. These symptoms are caused by the disruption of chlorophyll production and cell organization. Infected plants often show reduced tillering, shortened internodes, and a weak root system, which compromises their ability to survive winter and produce high-quality grain during the spring.

The biology of the Rye mosaic virus is intrinsically linked to its insect vectors, most notably aphids. These insects acquire the virus while feeding on infected plant tissues and transmit it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions. The virus can persist within alternative hosts, including perennial wild grasses and volunteer cereals, which act as reservoirs during the off-season.

Environmental conditions that favor the rapid spread of the virus include mild autumns and springs, which extend the activity period of aphid vectors. When these conditions coincide with the emergence of young rye shoots, the incidence of infection spikes. The rapid colonization of crops by aphids is the primary driver of disease distribution throughout the field.

The economic impact of the virus is significant, as it leads to poor grain filling and diminished photosynthetic efficiency. Since there are no antiviral agents for large-scale field application, management strategies focus on reducing the exposure of the crop to vectors and minimizing the availability of infection sources.
