Description

Ramularia macrospora is a fungal pathogen classified within the kingdom Fungi and the order Capnodiales. It is a specialized plant pathogen that primarily targets species of the genus Leucanthemum (daisy family). By acting as a parasite, the fungus extracts nutrients from the host plant's tissues, leading to localized cell death and structural damage.

The primary clinical sign of infection caused by this fungus is the development of distinct spots on the leaves. These lesions typically appear as circular or irregular greyish-brown areas, often surrounded by a darker margin. Under high humidity conditions, a white or pale grey powdery substance becomes visible on the underside of the leaves; this is the fungal conidial mass, which serves as the primary inoculum for further spread.

The life cycle of Ramularia macrospora is closely tied to its environment. The fungus overwinters as mycelium or sclerotia on infected leaf litter left on the soil surface. When spring temperatures rise and moisture levels increase, the fungus produces conidia, which are disseminated to new host tissues by water splashing, wind currents, or human interaction through gardening activities.

Conditions that promote the development of the disease include prolonged periods of leaf wetness and high humidity. Dense plant spacing inhibits air circulation, allowing the leaf surface to remain moist for longer periods, which is ideal for fungal spore germination. While the disease can be managed, it thrives in stagnant environments where air movement is insufficient.

The economic and aesthetic damage caused by this pathogen is significant. Infected plants suffer from reduced photosynthetic efficiency, leading to yellowing, premature leaf drop, and stunted growth. In ornamental horticulture, this pathogen can ruin the visual quality of the crop, making plants unmarketable and weakening their overall physiological health, which may lead to plant death in severe cases.

  • Remove and destroy all infected plant debris during autumn clean-up.
  • Ensure adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow.
  • Avoid overhead irrigation to minimize leaf surface moisture duration.
  • Apply preventative fungicides if the area has a history of Ramularia outbreaks.
  • Rotate crops and prioritize planting in well-drained soil.
