Ramulispora

Description

Ramulispora is a genus of anamorphic fungi in the order Capnodiales, well-known as causal agents of various foliar diseases in cereal crops, particularly sorghum and wheat. These pathogens are classified as plant-associated fungi that prioritize infecting the leaf tissues of their hosts, leading to significant physiological stress.

The primary symptom caused by these fungi is known as leaf spot or blight, characterized by distinct necrotic lesions on leaves and sheaths. These lesions often exhibit specific patterns, such as elongated spots with dark margins, which enlarge and coalesce over time, resulting in severe necrosis and potential premature death of the affected foliage.

The biology of Ramulispora is tightly linked to the survival of the fungus on crop residues. During the growing season, the pathogen produces conidia in specialized structures, which serve as the primary inoculum. Dissemination occurs mainly through wind-borne spores and rain splashing, facilitating the spread of the disease within the crop canopy when environmental conditions are conducive.

Disease development is heavily influenced by climate factors, primarily high humidity and optimal temperatures. Prolonged leaf wetness and moderate rainfall are essential for spore germination and successful infection. Consequently, the pathogen poses the highest threat during growing seasons with frequent precipitation, leading to decreased biomass accumulation and substantial yield losses.

Effective management and control of Ramulispora require an integrated approach:

  • Crop rotation strategies to reduce inoculum buildup in the soil.
  • Tillage practices that incorporate crop residues to promote decomposition.
  • Utilization of resistant or tolerant cultivars as the primary defensive line.
  • Application of broad-spectrum fungicides, including triazoles or strobilurins, during critical infection windows.
  • Strict field hygiene to minimize the presence of alternative host weeds.
