Description

Ramulispora sorghi is a fungal plant pathogen responsible for causing a specific leaf spot disease known as ramulispora leaf spot in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor). As an ascomycete fungus, it primarily targets the foliage of the host, leading to significant physiological stress during the plant's peak growth stages. It is recognized as a major concern for sorghum producers in humid agricultural regions.

The disease symptoms typically manifest as small, circular to oval lesions on the leaf blades. Over time, these spots enlarge, often developing necrotic centers with distinct reddish-purple borders, which is a hallmark of the infection. Under high humidity, small grayish-white masses of conidia appear within these spots, representing the asexual reproductive structures of the fungus which are crucial for the rapid secondary spread of the pathogen.

The biology of the pathogen revolves around its ability to survive in soil and on infected crop debris. During the growing season, conidia are produced and dispersed by wind, rain splashes, and movement of equipment. Once the spores land on susceptible host tissue, they germinate and penetrate the leaf surface. The infection cycle repeats multiple times throughout the season, leading to progressive foliage loss if conditions remain favorable for the fungus.

Optimal environmental conditions for the disease development include frequent rainfall, high relative humidity, and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. Dense plant canopy architecture, which traps moisture and reduces air circulation, significantly exacerbates the spread of Ramulispora sorghi. The disease is frequently more severe in fields where irrigation is applied frequently without proper crop management.

Economic damage is caused by the reduction of green leaf area, which limits the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, resulting in shriveled grains and lower biomass. To mitigate the impact, farmers should implement integrated pest management practices. These include the use of resistant sorghum hybrids, destruction of crop residues through tillage, proper spacing to encourage airflow, and the application of systemic fungicides when disease incidence reaches economic thresholds.
