As a plant pathogen, it is primarily recognized for its ability to cause white rot in a wide range of coniferous and deciduous trees, playing a complex role in forest ecology both as a decomposer and as an agent of wood degradation.
The disease mechanism involves the production of enzymes that effectively break down the structural components of wood, such as lignin and cellulose. This process transforms the internal wood structure into a soft, fibrous mass, significantly reducing the mechanical stability of the host tree. Consequently, infected trees become susceptible to stem breakage and root rot, leading to economic losses in timber production.
