As a necrotrophic fungus, it colonizes the stem tissues of the host plant, deriving nutrients from necrotic cells and disrupting the normal physiological processes of the raspberry bush.

Diseases and host plants: The primary host for this fungus is the cultivated raspberry (Rubus idaeus). The disease manifests as distinct, light-colored lesions on the canes, surrounded by a dark brown or purple border. These spots often coalesce, leading to severe cracking of the epidermis, which compromises the structural integrity of the canes and limits nutrient transport to the developing berries.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Rhabdospora ramealis is characterized by the production of pycnidia within the infected bark. These fruiting bodies release conidia during periods of high humidity and rainfall. The spores are dispersed by splashing water and wind onto nearby healthy canes.
