Rhizopycnis vagum is a soil-borne fungal pathogen belonging to the Fungi kingdom, commonly known for causing root rot in various agricultural and horticultural crops. This pathogen is a significant concern for growers due to its ability to persist in the soil environment for extended periods, acting as both a parasite on living roots and a saprophyte on plant debris.

The primary symptom of infection involves the decay and darkening of the root system, which prevents the plant from absorbing water and nutrients efficiently. This typically leads to stunting, chlorosis, and in severe cases, the sudden wilting and death of the plant. In the nursery stage, it can cause damping-off, leading to significant stand loss.

The biological cycle of this fungus involves the production of pycnidia, which serve as reservoirs for conidia. Once the pathogen enters the rhizosphere, it aggressively colonizes the root cortex.

It is particularly damaging in monoculture systems where the inoculum level has had the chance to accumulate in the soil over several growing seasons.
