Black kernel of rice, caused by the fungal pathogen Curvularia lunata, is a significant disease affecting rice cultivation globally. This pathogen belongs to the kingdom Fungi and is known to cause discoloration and decay of rice grains, significantly impacting agricultural yield.

The fungus primarily targets the panicles and developing grains. Curvularia lunata is characterized by its wide host range, infecting various cereal crops and grasses, which helps the fungus survive during off-seasons and spread across different agro-ecosystems.
