Description

Rice dwarf (Rice dwarf virus, RDV) is a destructive plant virus belonging to the genus Phytoreovirus and family Reoviridae. It is recognized as one of the most economically damaging viral pathogens affecting rice crops globally, particularly in temperate and subtropical regions of Asia.

The host range of this pathogen is primarily restricted to the Poaceae family, with rice (Oryza sativa) being the most susceptible crop. Additionally, various grassy weeds serve as alternative hosts, acting as a crucial reservoir for the virus during the off-season, which facilitates the persistence of the disease in agricultural areas.

The biological cycle of the virus is intricately linked to its insect vectors, specifically deltocephalid leafhoppers like Nephotettix cincticeps. The virus exhibits a circulative, propagative transmission mechanism within the insect, meaning it multiplies inside the vector and is passed on to offspring via transovarial transmission.

Infected rice plants display characteristic symptoms, including severe stunting, reduced tiller production, and the appearance of pale, chlorotic specks on the leaves that often form rows. These symptoms are most pronounced when plants are infected at the seedling stage, leading to significant yield losses or total failure of grain production.
