Description
Taxonomic position and type of pathogen. The rice root-knot nematode, scientifically classified as Meloidogyne graminicola, belongs to the kingdom Animalia, phylum Nematoda. It is a highly specialized obligate endoparasite that primarily infects the root systems of various grass species. It is considered a major limiting factor in rice production globally.
Diseases and host crops. This pathogen causes the formation of characteristic galls or knots on the roots of rice plants. While Oryza sativa is the primary host, the nematode also infects several other graminaceous crops and weed species. The infestation significantly restricts the plant's ability to absorb water and essential soil nutrients.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, four larval stages, and the adult stage. The second-stage juveniles (J2) are the infectious agents that penetrate the roots near the root tip. Upon entry, they induce the formation of giant cells within the root tissue, which serve as their exclusive food source throughout their developmental cycle.
Conditions for development and spread. The dissemination of M. graminicola occurs primarily through contaminated soil, irrigation water, and infected seedlings. The nematode thrives in temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. It exhibits remarkable environmental adaptability, maintaining its infectivity in both waterlogged rice paddies and drier soil conditions.
Harmfulness and control measures. Infestation results in stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and reduced grain yield. Effective management strategies involve a combination of approaches to suppress nematode populations. These include the use of resistant rice cultivars, rigorous crop rotation with non-host species, soil solarization, and the application of biological control agents such as antagonistic fungi.
