Rice tungro

Rice tungro

Description

Rice tungro is a severe viral disease caused by a complex of two viruses: the rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) and the rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV). This pathogen predominantly affects rice (Oryza sativa) crops and represents one of the most critical challenges to food security in South and Southeast Asia.

In terms of systematic classification, it is a viral complex transmitted through insect vectors in a semi-persistent or persistent manner. The bacilliform component is primarily responsible for the severe symptom expression, while the spherical component often facilitates the efficient transmission of the virus by leafhoppers, making the synergy between both essential for an outbreak.

The biology of the pathogen is strictly dependent on the leafhopper species of the genus Nephotettix. When these insects feed on infected plants, they acquire the virus. Once acquired, the leafhopper remains infectious for a period and transmits the pathogen to healthy plants during the feeding process on phloem sap, enabling rapid secondary spread within the field.

The spread and incidence of tungro are heavily influenced by the population dynamics of the insect vectors and the availability of inoculum sources. In regions with continuous rice cropping, the presence of susceptible host plants throughout the year creates an ideal environment for the virus to thrive and spread extensively during seasonal cycles.

The economic impact of tungro is profound, characterized by stunted plant growth, yellowing or orange discoloration of leaves, and reduced tiller numbers. In severe cases, the plants fail to produce panicles, or the grain remains underdeveloped, resulting in catastrophic yield losses that can approach 100% if management strategies are not implemented.

  • Deployment of resistant rice cultivars.
  • Systematic monitoring and control of leafhopper populations.
  • Adherence to synchronized planting schedules.
  • Removal of infected plants and alternative weed hosts.
  • Application of chemical insecticides to manage vectors.
