Description

Rice yellow stunt virus (RYSV) is a significant viral pathogen belonging to the genus Nucleorhabdovirus within the family Rhabdoviridae. This virus specifically infects rice plants (Oryza sativa), posing a substantial threat to rice production in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, where it can cause devastating economic losses.

The disease is characterized by distinct clinical symptoms, including the yellowing of leaves, severe stunting of the plant height, and excessive tillering that results in thin, weak stalks. Infected plants often exhibit delayed flowering or fail to produce panicles entirely. The grains that do form are frequently underdeveloped or empty, leading to a drastic reduction in total yield.

The biology of RYSV is dependent on its primary insect vector, the green leafhopper (Nephotettix virescens). The virus exhibits a persistent-propagative relationship with its host insect. Once a leafhopper acquires the virus through feeding, the pathogen must undergo a latent period within the insect before it can be transmitted to a healthy rice plant through sap-feeding.

Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of the green leafhopper are the primary drivers of RYSV outbreaks. Warm temperatures and high humidity promote rapid population growth of the vectors. The ability of the virus to persist in secondary hosts and reservoir weed species allows it to survive between cropping seasons, facilitating rapid spread when new rice seedlings are planted.

Management strategies for RYSV focus primarily on controlling the vector population and limiting viral spread. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices include:

  • Cultivating resistant or tolerant rice varieties.
  • Monitoring leafhopper populations and applying targeted insecticides.
  • Synchronizing planting dates across large areas to minimize exposure to migrating vectors.
  • Cleaning irrigation ditches and surrounding areas of host weeds.
  • Practicing field sanitation to destroy infected crop debris after harvest.
