Rotylenchus brachyurus is a species of migratory plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Hoplolaimidae. It is a cosmopolitan pathogen recognized for its ability to damage the roots of a diverse range of agricultural crops. As a semi-endoparasite, it feeds on plant root cells, causing significant physiological stress and reduced nutrient uptake in host plants.
This nematode affects many economically important crops, including maize, soybean, potatoes, peanuts, and various vegetables. Infested plants often show symptoms of stunting, wilting, and nutrient deficiency. The feeding activity creates lesions on the root surface, which not only directly reduces the plant's capacity to absorb water but also facilitates entry for soil-borne fungal and bacterial pathogens.
The life cycle of Rotylenchus brachyurus consists of eggs, four larval stages, and adults. Both juveniles and adults are motile in the soil, actively seeking host roots. Reproduction is continuous during favorable environmental conditions. Cultural practices such as crop rotation with non-host crops and strict weed management are vital to reduce nematode population densities in the soil.
