Rubus yellow net virus is a significant plant pathogen that primarily affects raspberries and blackberries. Belonging to the family of viruses that induce systemic chlorosis, it is a major concern for growers, as it impairs the physiological health of the host plant throughout the growing season.

The disease is characterized by a distinctive yellow network pattern along the leaf veins. As the infection advances, this pattern extends to the interveinal tissues, leading to generalized yellowing, leaf distortion, and significant stress on the plant, which prevents proper photosynthesis and nutrient synthesis.

The virus life cycle is inextricably linked to the aphid vector, specifically Aphis idaei. The aphid acquires the virus from infected plants while feeding on phloem sap and transmits it to healthy plants during subsequent feedings. The virus remains within the plant tissue indefinitely, establishing a chronic systemic infection.

Environmental conditions that favor the rapid reproduction of aphids, such as moderate temperatures and high humidity, contribute to the rapid spread of the virus. Because the virus is not mechanically transmitted, the primary mode of long-distance spread is through the distribution of infected nursery stock.

The impact of this pathogen on production is severe, as it leads to reduced fruit size, low sugar content, and a shortened lifespan of the raspberry bushes. Control strategies must focus on planting virus-free certified stocks and implementing systematic pest management programs to eliminate the aphid vectors before they can spread the disease.
