Sarocladium strictum is an anamorphic fungus belonging to the phylum Ascomycota. It is widely recognized as a major plant pathogen primarily affecting various grass species, including rice, maize, and sorghum. The fungus is known for its ability to produce secondary metabolites that facilitate the rapid degradation of host plant tissues.

The most devastating disease caused by this pathogen is sheath rot of rice. The infection typically appears as irregular, oblong, or brown-colored lesions on the leaf sheaths enclosing the young panicles. As the disease progresses, these lesions merge, covering the entire sheath and preventing the panicle from emerging properly, ultimately resulting in grain discoloration and yield loss.

The biological cycle of Sarocladium strictum involves the production of conidia, which serve as the primary inoculum for dissemination. These spores are dispersed by wind, rain splashes, and insect vectors. Once they land on susceptible tissue—often wounds or natural openings—the fungus penetrates the epidermis and colonizes the host, extracting nutrients and disrupting physiological processes.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the infection. The pathogen thrives in high-humidity environments (above 80% relative humidity) and moderate-to-warm temperatures. Poor ventilation within dense crop canopies and the presence of nitrogen-rich foliage can significantly accelerate the fungal growth rate, leading to severe outbreaks in commercial fields.

Effective management and control of Sarocladium strictum require an integrated strategy:

  • Implementation of crop rotation to reduce the pathogen load in the soil.
  • Use of disease-resistant or tolerant crop cultivars.
  • Balanced application of fertilizers to avoid excessive nitrogen levels.
  • Chemical control using systemic fungicides at the early stages of symptom development.
  • Integrated pest management to reduce vector-mediated spread of the fungus.
