Like other members of its genus, it persists in the environment by forming sclerotia—hardened masses of mycelium that serve as long-term survival structures in the soil or within infected plant debris.
The fungus is a significant seed-borne pathogen, causing severe damage to the reproductive structures of clover. Symptoms typically include the development of white mycelial mats on infected seeds and seed pods, leading to seed decay and reduced germination rates. In many cases, the pathogen invades the floral parts, preventing normal seed development and impacting the overall seed yield of the crop.
The life cycle of Sclerotinia spermophila is closely tied to environmental conditions. Sclerotia buried in the soil germinate during cool, wet seasons to produce apothecia, which are small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies. Managing Sclerotinia spermophila requires an integrated approach to minimize economic losses. Strategies include the use of disease-free, certified seed lots and seed treatments with systemic fungicides. Agronomic practices such as wide-row spacing to improve aeration, strict crop rotation intervals, and deep tillage to bury sclerotia deep in the soil profile are essential for reducing the inoculum level in the field.
