Scutellonema cavenessi is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Hoplolaimidae. Systematically, it is classified within the order Tylenchida. These microscopic roundworms are obligate endoparasites of the root systems of various agricultural plants, primarily found in tropical and subtropical soil environments, where they cause significant economic losses to crop production.

This pest affects a wide range of cultivated plants, causing general stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and a substantial reduction in total yield. It poses a particular threat to legumes, including peanuts, soybeans, and cowpeas. The infestation often results in compromised root integrity, which subsequently makes the host plants much more susceptible to secondary infections caused by soil-borne fungi and bacteria.

The biology of Scutellonema cavenessi is characterized by its ability to engage in both ectoparasitic and semi-endoparasitic feeding behaviors. The nematodes are highly active, migrating through the soil to locate host roots. Their lifecycle includes several larval stages that develop based on specific soil temperature and moisture parameters. In the absence of a host, the population can endure unfavorable conditions by entering a state of dormancy.

Development and dissemination of this species are directly influenced by abiotic factors. The nematode prefers loose, sandy soils with optimal moisture levels. It spreads across fields via soil water movement, agricultural machinery traffic, as well as through infected planting materials and runoff, which makes standard quarantine procedures highly challenging.

The damage caused by this nematode involves the degradation of root tissues, which severely inhibits the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients. This physiological stress leads to delayed flowering and poorly developed seeds. To manage and control this pest, the following integrated strategies are recommended:
